MARGATE PASTORAL CHARGE

Beginning in April, 2023, we were blessed to covenant with Ellen Locke as our Candidate Supply Minister until June, 2025.

Each Sunday morning, worship begins at 9:30 a.m. at Southwest River Church in Margate, immediately followed by 11:00 a.m. worship at Princetown Church in Malpeque. The churches of the Margate Pastoral Charge work well together, joining under one roof for special celebrations and worship, such as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving, as well as when there are guest speakers. The Charge has traditionally held two Christmas Eve services, a family service and a Communion service. A Grad Service is held each year to recognize and celebrate the high school graduates from our Charge. The Margate Pastoral Charge also takes part in the Kensington Harvest Festival Ecumenical Service each August, where all local denominations come together to worship at the local rink.

Both churches within the Margate Pastoral Charge have the same music director who has strong leadership skills. Both choirs enjoy sharing their talents during worship. Throughout the year, our organist arranges "song services", involving the choirs and others willing to share their musical talents such as soloists, pianists, and guitarists. These services are always very popular with all age groups. Princetown has approximately 8 choir members, and Southwest River has approximately 15 choir members.

Congregation members have helped collect food bank items, white gifts at Christmas time, and have raised funds for Nkando Primary School in Kenya. For several years, our Sunday Schools have been twinned with primary schools through the organization Farmers Helping Farmers. It is always fun to exchange letters with the children in Kenya.

Several times throughout the year, our church services are multi-generational with participation by the youth through readings, skits, and the sharing of musical talent, which is enjoyed by all.

Session

The Sessions of both churches meet about four times per year. The Session acts as the nominating committee for filling volunteer positions in all church offices and committees. Elders have their individual family lists, to whom they deliver newsletters and respond to any concerns of the congregation members. Elders provide leadership for a couple of worship services per year.

Christian Events Committee

The Christian Events Committee in our charge has two purposes:
1. to organize events outside of regular worship in order to promote social connections.
2. to fundraise for our twinned school in Kenya.

Some of the events organized by the committee in the past include:
1. Annual Charge Dinner with a guest speaker or entertainment.
2. Sunday Night Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
3. Fun Run for KENYA.
4. Seniors Christmas Dinner and worship.
5. Annual worship and potluck at Camp Abegweit.

Southwest River Church has a UCW group. They assist the Stewards in keeping the cabin at Camp Abegweit in good repair.

The Charge prepares a Newsletter four times per year, and the Elders deliver them to all members of the congregation and visit with the church families.

Margate Pastoral Charge combines attendance from both churches for Bible study.

Throughout the year, various fundraising events are undertaken. Proceeds are used to help with church expenses as well as helping those in need. The Charge sponsors several families at Christmas with donations of gift cards and food.

Often in September, the Margate Pastoral Charge has a Church service at Camp Abegweit which is located in Augustine Cove. Throughout the year the Margate Pastoral Charge carries out a number of services at Clinton View Lodge. We also have had the Blessing of the Animals where people are encouraged to bring their pets into the church to be blessed.
